Bound and Beyond
Artist Statement: ‘Bound and Beyond’ explores the feeling of being caught between confinement and freedom, where sometimes we are both the cage and the bird trying to break free. The fragmented face represents the different thoughts, emotions, fears, and experiences that exist within us at once. Rather than representing brokenness, these fragments can become openings for change, growth, and transformation. The birds move through the fragmented portrait as symbols of the parts of ourselves that continue to search for freedom, hope, and something beyond what we already know.
The chaotic textures and vibrant colours reflect the confusion, doubt, struggle, and possibility that can exist within this process. I see the work as a reflection of palimpsest through its layers of the self, where nothing is completely erased, but instead remains as a trace beneath who we are becoming.
I created the piece entirely in Adobe Photoshop through digital manipulation, combining a stock portrait with my own textures, brushes, effects, and painted elements, gradually building layers of colour, distortion, and imagery. Although the work was created before I came across the theme, Palimpsest immediately resonated with its idea of traces remaining beneath new layers. The piece reflects how what once confined us can remain part of us while simultaneously becoming part of the path toward freedom.
I am a self taught digital artist who has been creating since 2021. My work is driven by life itself, the experiences I move through and the emotions I observe in others. Through digital compositing and painting, I build visual narratives that explore the emotional side of being human.
